Back to a time before I became “The Rev.” Back to the blues-rock root that I learned playing that old guitar.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e1964 Gibson SG Jr “That Old Guitar”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e“That old guitar” Bratcher refers to is a classic white 1964 Gibson SG Jr., which he played on this CD. And there’s a story behind how he got the guitar and how it set him on the path to becoming a musician as a youngster growing up in Kansas City.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e“In the driveway was a 1958 Desoto; in the house were a 12-year-old boy and his dad with a plan,” recalls Bratcher. “‘Will trade 1958 Desoto for electric guitar and amplifier,’ was how the ad read in the Kansas City Star newspaper. One call came and I went home with a beautiful white Gibson SG Jr. and a Gibson amplifier. That’s where it all started and I still have both the guitar and amp to this day.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eOn that day was not only a musician born but also a self-confessed “guitar freak,” who plays several different vintage guitars and amps on Secretly Famous. “I never understood the attraction to vintage guitars till one day it hit me,” says Bratcher. “There’s something very special about playing, a guitar that has had a lifetime of music played through it. Throughout my life, I’ve received many guitars as gifts. In fact, most of the guitars that I own were given to me as gifts. They are constant reminders to me that music is a gift to us all and it’s my honor to play it for you. Oh yeah, the songs I played the SG on are the solos of “I Can’t Shake That Thing” \u0026amp; “Starting All Over Again.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eFrom Jimmie\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003e“I wrote most of the songs on Secretly Famous and had the honor of co-writing the opening track, ‘Jupiter \u0026amp; Mars,’ with my son Jason. The song was Jason’s idea and once I read the first line – ‘Blinding light, a flash of chrome, hot-head blonde in a tricked-out Ford’ - I was hooked. There’s also something about my playing on this song that is just wrong enough to be right. The groove drags you into the song so you can’t help but feel it. All the songs I wrote on Secretly Famous are for people like me. Kansas City singer-songwriter, guitarist and ordained minister, Jimmy Bratcher was surely inspired by this legacy during the creation of his latest project simply titled I’m Hungry. With the help of his wife, Sherri, he has created a cookbook of nearly 200 recipes gathered from some of the world’s finest chefs and friends and family with an accompanying album of culinary inspired tunes. Bratcher earned the moniker “The Electric Rev,” by delivering inspirational live performances and writing compelling material which pairs the musical language of the blues with spiritual messages for decades. For his seventh album Bratcher gathered several musical friends in Kansas City and Nashville to record 10 original tracks and two inspired cover songs to round out this unique project. The music ranges from barrelhouse boogie to straight-ahead blues, roots rock and soul, mixed to enhance and inspire the downhome recipes, creating an entertaining and irreverent collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eWhile the songs on the album don’t reference any specific recipes, beyond the reference to fried chicken, they do speak of many of the ingredients and the joy of cooking. The opening track ‘I Love Her Name,’ spells out that affection with words that could’ve been in a kid’s playground song but here are driven by barrelhouse piano from John Selle, setting the table for the delectable delights to come. Bratcher then plays the role of a man tormented by being denied his pleasure upon doctor’s orders for the loping shuffle ‘Mama Won’t Fry No Chicken.’ Every good cook knows that the aroma of food is central to the presentation, so on ‘Bacon Is On My Mind,’ Bratcher uses a bump and grind 12-bar blues to pontificate about one of the world’s most powerful olfactory elements. The double entendre is thick, and the schmaltz is deep on the jazzy pop ballad ‘Baby I Like What You’re Cooking,’ with sublime guitar work. An entire album could have been recorded of cover songs written about food, thus giving importance to the first of two Bratcher selected. The Keb’ Mo’ tune, ‘Government Cheese,’ is a straightforward funky blues that has a subtle socio-political message behind it, reflective of the struggles many people are facing today.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAnyone who’s been to Kansas City knows that it is the home of great music and great barbecue. Bratcher takes us on a tour of the KC hotspots during the driving blues ‘Where You Gonna Stop,’ name checking his favorite joints. The instrumental track sitting in the middle of the album is perfectly named ‘Greasy,’ with this southern fried funk groove that sets up tasty guitar licks. He then uses a spicy rhumba to extol the virtues and faults of poultry during ‘Chicken Tastes The Same.’ The second line anthem ‘Green Bananas,’ from his 2008 album “The Electric Rev” gets a remix adding spoken word backstory to the ‘carpe diem’ aphorism. The crew then takes a little liberty by framing Little Milton‘s 1969 Stax Soul classic ‘Grits Ain’t Groceries,’ as a Texas shuffle that allows Bratcher to stretch out on a sizzling guitar lead.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eReprising another selection from his discography the fun-loving country blues, ‘Bologna Sandwich Man,’ from his album “Secretly Famous,” revealing the secret foodie passion that has been brewing for years. In order to be accepted, I had to submit some recorded music and have some backing tracks to perform with, in prison. So, I rounded up some local musician friends and we headed into the studio. With a limited budget and even less recording experience for me, we emerged with 6 songs that I would use as backing tracks during my prison performances. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eAs I was finishing up the engineer Larry Gann insisted that I do not stop with just backing tracks, but that I record vocals and lead guitar on the 6 songs.
